A JOURNEY TO MESOPOTAMIA

Sumerian Experience:

Do it the Cuneiform way!

World lit students in their quest for the best tablet creation...

Cuneiform is the system of writing in Ancient Sumeria. The sumerians used "wedge-shaped" symbols to represent their idea or message. They used  a pointed-tip object or "stylus" to carve the symbols into a soft clay tablet before it hardens.

These students were making their good share in the history.  :-)
It's fun to create and share... try it yourself!

Literary Focus: The Epic of Gilgamesh
Questions to ponder:

1. Who is Gilgamesh? How is his character described in the story?
2. What is the role of Enkidu in the story? Why did he oppose the decision of the gods to end his life?
3. What is the most striking line/ group of words presented on the tablets (from tablet 8 to 11)? How is it affecting your present situation or belief?

  1. Life is a matter of choice. Gilgamesh has proven it. He chose to leave all things behind including fame and luxury just to search for the best weapon against man's opponent--death. He knows that man has to enjoy life no matter how hard or simple it is, because nothing is much sweeter than to stay with your loved one forever.

"The flood is so great that even the gods are frightened.."

Of all the striking lines I've read from the epic of Gilgamesh, what I've chosen is what I think struck me most. For some, they wouldn't think how profound it is. It reminds me of "The Judgement Day" which will soon happen. The prophecy says great fire will devour the world, all humanity even all creations will be destroyed. All unbelievers and those who have forsaken God will suffer eternal damnation. Those who believe and remain steadfast with their faith will receive everlasting life.

I've seen the movie "2012". It was a very great movie to remind people of what is the real purpose of living. It is a note that we are given life to serve God and live in accordance of His sacred words. On that very day where everything will come to an end. All the riches in this world, all achievements, material possessions and other artificial luxuries will vanish in a blink of an eye. For all are futile. Money wont buy salvation for goodness' sake.

Thus, I don't believe the 2012 phenomenon interpreted by Mayan scholars. It is written in the Bible,Revelations Verses 15- 19 that NO ONE knows when will be the end of the world and when will it last, only God. All there is in Earth will taste the ire of God and witness the terrifying destruction of everything.

I admit, for sometime I get so overwhelmed with the things in this wicked world. I tend to focus more of improving myself more than my spiritual being like Gilgamesh used to be.

I am a Christian by heart, mind and soul. I value the words of God and truly live a Christian way. I fear not of what will happen on that day for I am rest assured of my faith and fate. Yes, I commit sins yet I repent and ask for His forgiveness. I feel that in my sojourn, He is with me all the time guiding my way. I am very grateful to be one of His servants. I will continue to praise His Almighty Name and follow Him forever come what may in my life.

=) ^_^ God bless everybody.! Have a great new year celebration... Wiii! ♥

    3. What is the most striking line/ group of words presented on the tablets (from tablet 8 to 11)? How is it affecting your present situation or belief?

    “Man is destined to die”

In tablet 10, entitled Gilgamesh travels to Uta Napishti at the edge of the world, I found the most striking line for me. Uta Napishti is very true to his words that man is really destined to die. It is very true to all human beings. We are not perfect and we do not possess this word called eternity or eternal life until we are here in this imperfect world.

These words really affect my life because, as a Christian, I am servant of God and waiting for the moment when He would be here for some people to be judge and to be here to the holy people to give the eternity they wanted, not in this life but in the life to come. I believed that life on earth is not permanent and that includes all the riches and material things this world can offer. This life is just borrowed from God and so we must worshipped Him with all our hearts and exalt His name for His greatness. Being a Born-Again Christian has to pass this test, being dead and be born again through Christ our Lord. We need to kill what is in our old self that is very sinful in nature. God promises eternal life, which the way of accomplishing it is just simple, just repent your sins on Him, give Him praise and surrender all to Him. In John 5:24, “Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come to judgment, but has passed from death to life.”

We must not focus on things on earth like Gilgamesh does that loves fame, wealth and lust and also we must not pursue eternity here on earth but we must live for the life to come, the life that promised by God.

Merry Christmas to all and a Prosperous New Year to come… God bless us all!!!

These words really affect my life because, as a Catholic, This life is just borrowed from God and so we must worshiped Him with all our hearts. and that true that "man is destined to die", any moment "man is destined to die".

The answer to the question, “Why do people destined to die?” is quite simple and can ultimately be summed up in one word: SIN. Every human being will die because of sin. Again, death was able to enter into the human race because of sin (Romans 5:12). Adam and Eve died because of sin and you will experience death at some point for the very same reason. The Bible says, “The soul who sins is the one who will die” (Ezekiel 18:4). The Bible also clearly declares that “…all have sinned…” (Romans 3:23) and that “…the wages (the result) of sin is death…” (Romans 6:23). When the Bible speaks of death being a result of sin it is actually referring to two distinct realities. The first form of death is physical and is when our heart stops beating and our earthly life comes to an end. The Bible also describes a second death: “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars – their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death” (Revelation 21:8). This second death is after our earthly life and is an eternal form of punishment for our sins.

Merry Christmas to all and a Happy New Year to come.., God bless us all!!! c",)

    1) What is the most striking line/group of words presented on the tablets(from tablet 8 to 11)? How is it affecting your present situation of belief?

    Answer:

"Death is inevitable for all men"

This sentence is the most striking sentence in table 10. It tells that all creature of God including us, will not escape Death. All of us will turn into ashes where we came from. As of what happening to our world. it is the fact that the judgement is sooner than we expect. There are so many tragedies that happened not only to our country but to the whole world. God is now starting to get the life that he once let us borrow. People can't escape the Death. it does not care if you are rich or poor, as long as it is your time to leave our world they will get your life.
Though it is full of fear on us to hear the word Death, we don't have any choice but to face it in right time so as long as we are alive, we should do good things. Life is to short, don't make it a mess.

"DEATH IS INEVITABLE FOR ALL MEN"

the most striking word to me is on tablet 10, Death is inevitable and whether willingly or unwillingly, everyone will enter grave. The pointed hour is secret. Death may come at any time to cut off anyone, without differentiating between young and old. I think in some points in our lives, the thought of death looming, gives us the heebie jeebies. The most crucial aspect of this is to not lose focus on life by the though of the after life. Life is to short to be wasted on the inevitable. Concentrate on what you have, The love you shared among your family is vital, bigger than friendship.
Always treasure the love of your family, especially your mom, dad, siblings and even your family, because death knocks when you leats expect it to do so. If you have any hanging arguments, go work it out now before it's too late. Remember to always tell your loved ones how grateful you are having them in your life.

tablet 10, entitled Gilgamesh travels to Uta-Napishti at the edge of the world,
Gilgamesh exploits his fear of dying to Uta-napishti because of what happen to Enkidu.

    "Fear of Dying"

for me dying is the sample of choosing and not choosing or accepting and declining. And there
is this thoughts of ready to die and afraid to die. Decisions is meant for dying if you accepted the risk that can kill you then its your fault you accepted it :D, death is somehow important i think -_- that's because this is the time that you will know how important you are, only your already dead, i guess that's what i think. I think it's normal to fear death, fearing death will force you to reach your dreams or in what you want it to be. Fear of dying, you are definitely be having abnormally because "here you are disregarding the truth of life".

"The river rises and the flood washes away the houses of man"

(Tablet 10 - Gilgamesh travels to Uta-Napishtiat at the edge of the world)
    Epic of Gilgamesh

We are all part of GOD's creations, HE gave us eyes to see, hand to feel, feet to follow our path, intelligence to be superior among all of his creations and will to decide on our own.

GOD didn't create the world to be perfect to the eyes of man, as a part of his creation; I may say that Man must act responsible for his/her acts. God gave us intelligence for us to have known all things ever existed and will to decide for ourselves.

Through our living we are not always on the top, there are a lot of things that aren't permanent in our lives. We may gain something and in return lost what we already have. Sometimes through our sufferings we forgot to realize how important our life is, there are things we must take into reality that life is not a fairy tale to have happy endings but life is like a river that flows through; like ourselves following our own will and our own path. When the river rises and the flood washes away the houses of man, at the end of the day the water will dry and the sun will rise and gives another hope for tomorrow.

There might be a lot of problems that we may encounter in the future but remember that without these difficulties we might not be a better person.
Those floods will teach us how important our life is to make it worth living.

"DEATH IS INEVITABLE FOR ALL MEN"

For me, this striking line from tablet 10 is the most highlighted words. We, the people are born and living in this material world as a mortal being. "DEATH" is a "TERMINATION" for everyone of us and it must happened, we cannot escape it, and we cannot cheat it, we do not have a choice but to accept and face the truth that we are destined to death.
We do not know how, where, and when our certain death will happen.
Every one has end, end is death. Every one has death

It seems to me most strange that men should fear; Seeing that death, a necessary end. Will come when it will come

    Answer to question No.3

"He Compares Enkidu to a trusted weapon at his side, a wild ass, a donkey and a panther"
line from Epic of Gilgamesh tablet 8: The Funeral of Enkidu.

This line means Enkidu is a trusted friend like a weapon that we use in the battle. Our weapon in the battle is the only thing that we can trust because that weapon is our protector in that battle.

I choose this line because i also compare all my true friends i8n a weapon ta my side.... all my friends is a trustewd people and i prove that many times. I know they always protect me in my enemies like what Enkidu do to Gilgamesh.
If you are a trusted person I consider you a true4 person....

3.) What is the most striking line/group of words presented on the tablets (from tablet 8 to 11)? How is it affecting your present situation of belief?

I found the most striking line in Tablet 9: The wanderings of Gilgamesh

“He fears death and seeks eternal life.”

Is there anyone who does not fear death? Talking about death scares many people and makes them wonder what life is after death. Like what happened to Gilgamesh in the epic, there was a time in my life when I fear to die. I wondered why people must die and what will happen to me after I leave my physical body. So blessed, I turned to be a Christian and accepted Christ as my Savior. And that was the time when I discovered all the answers to my questions.

In Matthew 10:28 NIV it is said that, “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. Rather, be afraid of the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” This verse set my mind that we should not be afraid on what will happen to our body here on earth rather focus on what will happen to your body and soul after death. “Just as man is destined to die once … ” according to Hebrew 9:27 NIV. Our body here on earth will come to an end whether we like it or not, it’s just a matter of being ready, anytime will be our last time, so be prepared! :)

If this world is just a temporary home for everyone, how can we get eternal life? Same question by a rich young man in the bible, found in Matthew 19:16-17 NIV, 16Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, "Teacher, what good thing must I do to get eternal life?" 17"Why do you ask me about what is good?" Jesus replied. "There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the commandments." So that’s it! For us to have eternal life we have to accept Jesus in our lives and follow God’s commandments.

All of us wanted eternal life but nobody wants to die! Funny, isn’t it? But if you will read the Book of Revelation in the Bible, you will be inspired to follow Jesus and get eternal life, because there is an unexplainable joy waiting for the Sons of God and they will inherit all the riches in heaven. Revelation 21:4 says that “He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away." Revelation 21:8 “But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death."

Now my question is, are you still afraid of death? Seeking for eternal life? Seek Jesus first! I already did. Life is worth living with Jesus :’) God bless everyone! ♥♥♥

"He Fears Death and Seeks Eternal Life"
(Tablet 9: The Wanderings of Gilgamesh)

I have read in Tablet 9 that Gilgamesh fears death and seeks eternal life through Uta-napishti, son of Ubar-Tutu.

The words "FEARS DEATH and SEEKS ETERNAL LIFE" caught my attention.

    FEARS DEATH:
Almost all of us is afraid of dying, just like Gilgamesh. Maybe not only of our own death, but also the death of the people around us; our love ones.
But unlike Gilgamesh who can asks Gods to give him eternal life, we ordinary human beings are destined to die. We may not know how or when but we know that someday we'll have to face death wether we like it or not.
    ETERNAL LIFE:
If given a chance, ofcourse some of us would like to live forever. For us to to find or experience pleasure for ourselves or other people that surrounds us.
But some might refuse to this opportunity, like me. Because i don't want to witnessed all the death of the people around me especially my love ones.
I JUST WANT TO MAKE THE MOST OUT OF THE LIFE GOD HAS GIVEN ME. (=

    “Not to chase sorrow”

Sorrow is a deep distress, disappointment, sadness, or regret especially for the loss of someone or something loved. We always feel that if we loss someone God didn’t love us. That’s the big mistake of us. Everything happens has a reason.

Don’t think too much on what happen bad to you to avoid sadness. Sorrow is always being there especially when we are alone. But we can avoid that if we thinks’ positively that God is always there to be with us, also a friend and a member of our family.

I enjoyed my life so much. No regrets at all. Because if you do regret's, you’re blaming yourself too, you must be sure on whatever your decision is. Because when you decide, you can no longer take back your decisions.

For you to become happy and not chasing the word “sorrow“ , move on or forgot the things that made you sad. Enjoy every minutes of your life, live life healthy. And always smile.. 

because it signifies the limitations and the end of a being or even anything that has live and it cant be undone or even be stop because thats is what is destined to happen to everyone to have a new life and be reborn we may not know when and where it's still going to happen.

_It is presented on Tablet 9

" Fears Death and Seeks Eternal Life"

    ..This line is really strange.

For me if you love your life and your enjoying every minute of it you don't have to fear death.
Actually, to fear death reveals one's misunderstanding of life. Most of us fear death, don't we? We may say we believe in eternal life, in a heaven that is a life of bliss, a life much better than this world.

The most important point is that we don't have to be afraid of death, for we are all immortal.
The best thing to do is to focus our consciousness as much as we can and live every minute of our life to the fullest.Of course, it always may be a little sad to leave our home and loved ones, but if we are going to a bigger and more beautiful home, then what is there to be sorry about?

I think we just have to let go our fear and let God put us where we will make the most progress.

Trust that God will take care of us.

    That's all I can say..

As I browse tablets 8-11, this line compelled me the most..

"Death is inevitable for all men"

I believe that death will surely come to our mortal bodies. Death is something that we should be prepared of. It is something that we should not be afraid of instead we should rejoice about it. The essence of life is based upon the reasons that we are living for. The most important thing about living is living our lives to the fullest based on our own beliefs. One thing is for sure is that death is only the beginning of the eternal life that is meant for us to live.

"Death is a necessary fact because of the will of Gods; all human effort is only temporary, not permanent." This line from the epic Gilgamesh enthrall me as a reader as it conveys the deepest essence of life.
"Have you experienced being somewhat like Gilgamesh? It is for sure that we as a human being reflected on Gilgamesh. His personality typify our inner desires which is aiming for unnecessary thing.
Isn't that we encounter a situation in our life where we feel unsatisfied? Thus, we're not contented for what life offered and served. We ahve a restless heart as Gilgamesh even though some already received all the gems of life. We have this emptiness within us; a little space that awaits for something to fill it up. On our innermmost being we aspire for an unknown happiness and joy despite all teh things we acquire(fame, money, intelligence, etc.)
Above all these encounters, may we bear in mind that we already rceived the greatest gift - LIFE. We may have ONE LIFE, but its span is long enough to make the most of it. Since it has limitation, we must take and grab every chances and opportunities it offers and take the risk if possible. The finale of our journey in LIFE is not insight, no one of us can't see where and when the end point was; but surely we all reach it on the time GOD has set - "GOD only knows" as quoted.
LIFE'S adventure depend to the one who holds it; it may be rough and tough but the success is possible if one knows how to handle it.
LIFE is about two interrelated words - BREATH and DEATH. Our heartbeat signals that we're still ivign here on earth meaning we still have time to do the stuffs according to the will of GOD. But when it stops; we already reach the edge which means all automatically freeze.
Every second counts and the tick of the clock will suddenly stop so "GUYS, WE MUST CELEBRATE LIFE TO THE FULLEST."
